Please, just leave!
This is a story from when I was a kid in Korea in the 1970s. My mom still brings it up sometimes when our family gets together. We lived in an old house in the countryside. It had a tiled roof, a dirt courtyard, and the rooms were separated by those old wooden sliding doors covered with paper. There were no locks on the doors between rooms, and they were so light that even a kid could slide them open easily. One winter night, at around 2 a.m., there was a loud THUD from the room next to us. My mom woke up immediately. The wind had been really strong that night, but this was different. The sound had come from inside the room. There had also been burglaries in a nearby village around that time. The room had a window facing the courtyard, and the wall around the house was low enough to climb over pretty easily. She went over to the sliding door and tried to open it. It wouldn’t move. She tried again, harder. Still nothing. That was when she really started to panic. There was no lock on that door. Normally, it took almost no effort to open. Someone was holding it shut from the other side. She started yelling through the door. “There’s nothing in this house worth stealing! Please, just leave! We won’t look at you. Just go!” No response.
